Fujifilm has developed a low-cost plastic optical fibre for high-speed communications. Fujifilm says that its plastic optical fibre is capable of achieving transmission speeds of more than 1 gigabyte per second, is much cheaper than glass optical fibre, and is less costly to install since it is easier to handle. The company expects the optical fibre market to take off over the next few years as demand for broadband communications increases.
